Missouri Labor Rally

IBEW Local 1 journeyman wireman and
Missouri Senate candidate Tim Green
addressed the large crowd on the state
Capitol steps in Jefferson City, MO.

L.U. 1 (as,c,ees,ei,em,es,et,fm,i, mt,rts,s,se,spa,st&ws), ST LOUIS, MOOn April 27 a huge labor rally was held at the state Capitol in Jefferson City to oppose Republican-sponsored bills in the Missouri Legislature that would harm Missouri working families. Bills seeking to ban project labor agreements, decrease unemployment benefits, restrict workers compensation availability, and make Missouri a "right-to-work" state are all on the horizon.

Over 200 Local 1 members and officers joined more than 2,000 construction trades unionists at the Capitol to support Democratic legislators (several of whom are IBEW Local 1 members) who work tirelessly to represent the rights of working people. Speakers included numerous labor-friendly leaders, including Local 1 member and Missouri Senate candidate Tim Green, as well as Gov. Bob Holden.

November elections are critical to winning back the Republican controlled Missouri House and Senate. Labor can make this happen. Encourage your families, friends and co-workers to vote for labor-friendly candidates. Your votes are crucial to our families well being and the future of our industry.

Please be advised of the following deaths: Pauline McKenzie, Daniel McCarthy, Joseph Wilson, Gerald Ingram, John Sprague Jr., John Bausola Jr., Clyde Hoyt, Aloyes Rowbottom, Thomas Bernsen, Marvin Adler, Edward Weber and Tony Branch.

Apprentice Orientation

Local 6 cable
car to survey
the St. Patricks
 Day parade.

L.U. 6 (c,i,o,st&u), SAN FRANCISCO, CAThe work situation in San Francisco remains stable through the first quarter of 2004. We have been fortunate that most of our local journeymen and all of our apprentices are currently employed. Bus. Mgr. John ORourke and I recently gave an orientation to a brand new class of apprentices, many of whom waited on a list for two years to begin their careers with the IBEW.

In mid-March, the business manager, officers and staff attended the retirement celebration of Local 332 former business manager Terry Tanner. Local 6 wishes Bro. Tanner well in his new life of leisure.

Also in March, hundreds of union members participated in the 152nd St. Patricks Day parade here. Local 6 was strongly represented, as active members and retirees joined the San Francisco Building Trades in the historic march up Market Street to City Hall.

Special thanks to Bro. Lou Sullivan, who designed this years Local 6 parade T-shirt in classic Celtic artwork.

Bush Keeps Boasting

L.U. 8 (i&mt), TOLEDO, OHGeorge Bush keeps coming to Toledo boasting about his "jobless" economic recovery but he never brings any new jobs with him. All we seem to get is plant closings and unemployment. Were still waiting for some big jobs, which are in the planning stages. We have put some of our members to work on short duration jobs but we need a lot more of those to clear Book I. Employment is our members main concern along with health care, national security and hope for the future, but the Bush Administration does little to help. It seems that everything Bush does is wrong for the average Americanbut for millionaires its another story.

Local 8 held its nomination of officers in May. At the time of this writing, the local union election was scheduled for June and several officers were running unopposed: Bus. Mgr. Dennis Duffey, Fin. Sec. Roy Grosswiler, Rec. Sec. Greg Hammer and Treas. Jim Kozlowski. Elections results for all officers will be announced subsequently.

Local 8 is ready to welcome our IBEW brothers to Toledo on Aug. 18-20 for the Wiremans Golf Association Tournament. Im sure we can show you all a good time and great golf score. Good luck.

Excellent Web Site

L.U. 9 (catv, govt, lctt,o&u), CHICAGO, ILOn March 14 we again participated in Chicagos Southside St. Patricks Day Parade. Nearly 500 members with their families marched along the parade route behind the Local 9 float.

On April 5 Local 9 hosted the annual "Old Timers" dinner. Over 1,000 members and guests turned out to honor members who retired last year.

Our annual Family Picnic will be held Sept. 11. Because of the expected large turnout, a change of venue was required. We will be at Millers Meadow Groves on First Avenue and Roosevelt Rd. in Maywood. Details will be mailed to members.

The November national election is just around the corner. Vote for candidates who support workers interests! This is also a critical election for Illinois. We have the opportunity to elect a Democratic Senator to Washington to join incumbent Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Il) in his fight for Illinois working families.

The IBEW has an excellent web site: www.ibew.org. Issues relating to working conditions and safety are covered. Also, you can use the web site to e-mail your congressmen about issues important to labor and especially the IBEW: Click on "Political Action Center" to join the activists list and receive Action Alerts.
