New Jersey Utility Strike Ends (UPDATE)

March 18, 2005

Workers who had spent the last three months on strike returned to their jobs at Jersey Central Power & Light on March 16, a day after ratifying a contract proposal. Approximately 1,350 members of five unions walked out on December 8 following months of unsuccessful bargaining with the company. The workers earned wage increases and resolved work rule issues like how and when the company can call workers in to respond to emergencies.

"Given what the company had originally proposed and their ongoing demands during the negotiations, this contract is a vast improvement," said IBEW system council spokesman Jack Moriarty. "And, while the membership struggled through these last 14 weeks, in the end they achieved what many other unions could not. Their strength and resolve permitted the leadership to stand firm against a huge corporation and accomplish a positive result. It was a team effort all the way."

Jersey Power Strike
March 14, 2005

More than 1,300 IBEW Jersey Central Power & Light workers in New Jersey could be back on the job as soon as Wednesday if they approve a tentative contract hammered out after a marathon 14-hour negotiating session over the weekend. Leaders of System Council U-3 are recommending ratification for the vote on Tuesday. The workers, members of five unions, have been on strike for over three months following disagreements on work rules, salaries and the cost of health care.
