Members Voting on Tentative Settlement with Canadian Railroad

April 1, 2005

IBEW members who maintain and repair signals and communications for Canadian National Railway Co. are voting on a tentative contract that was finalized on March 25, on the brink of a strike that would have shut down the country’s biggest railroad.Luc Couture, International Representative for the First District, credited the "strike mandate" from the 644 IBEW members and the "72-hour strike notice" as the driving forces pushing the carrier to resolve outstanding issues. The settlement will "form the basis for a continued relationship between IBEW members and the company, said Kevin Kearns, IBEW system general chairman, in the Toronto Globe and Mail.

Votes on the provisional agreement will be counted on May 5 after ballots have been sent across the country, including very remote areas, says Couture. The IBEW Web site will report on details upon ratification.
