IBEW To Recruit New Members At Washington ShipyardNovember 3, 2005 New work orders and a cooperative agreement among unions are helping increase IBEW membership at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington.Bremerton, Washington Local 574 is taking advantage of an August memorandum of understanding between the IBEW and the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers that directed physical science technicians at the nuclear shipyard become designated members of the IBEW. The agreement is the result of a multi-year effort to consolidate the number of unions representing workers at the naval station, which was merged with a nearby maintenance facility in 2002. The unit of those who would become IBEW members is expanding now, since the recent federal approval of work orders to repair, upgrade and modify the naval fleet’s nuclear-powered ships. The potential for new IBEW members at the now-combined Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility at Bangor is more than 250, including physical science technicians and electricians, said Local 574 Business Manager Ernest Martsching. Before the merger, Local 574 represented approximately 220 members Except for the new hires, all the IBEW-eligible employees were members of the IFPTE and the International Association of Machinists. Under federal law, each eligible worker must elect to join the IBEW, Martsching said. An all-out campaign to organize the newly eligible workers will begin soon.
