.

L.U. 38 (i), CLEVELAND, OHIn the accompanying photo, Sister Lorene Chlopecki is shown receiving her diploma at Local 38s Scroll Party from Bus. Mgr. Sam Chilia. Congratulations to all the apprentices who topped out and to all the journeymen who were honored at the party and received their years-of-service pins.

Sister Chlopecki was also honored by the national AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C., for her hard work on the 2004 election. The officers thank her and all the members who volunteered during the election cycle.

We have been meeting with ISG Steel and the company tells us that electrical packages should be out by February for the Galvanizing Line. They expect it to staff up soon after as they have set a date of Sept. 1, 2005, to have it operating. Presently we have Lake Erie, Herbst and Phillips Electric doing work in the mill.

The big contracts for Charter Steel are not out yet, but Lake Erie Electric is onsite abating the lead splices in the manholes and clearing out the duct banks.

The Cleveland Clinic says the $300 million Heart Center packages should be awarded soon.

Wagner-Smith Electric signed a contract with the Cleveland Water Dept. for the $27 million backup generator jobs.

California Line Work

Local 47 Examining Board members, (L-R), Trevor Kirkland, Arnold Trevino and Armando Mendez; and new Executive Board member Bobby Van Noy.

L.U. 47 (lctt,mo,u,uow&o), DIAMOND BAR, CALocal 47 teams did well at the International Linemans Rodeo. Steve Lekvold, Brian Lee and Bruce Gosset from SCE placed fourth overall and second in the IOUs. Jay Clark, Russ Nolen and Gary Nolen from PAR placed fourth in the Contractor Division. Congratulations to all the teams and competitors!

On Nov. 5, 2004, the local filed an NLRB representation petition for IRBY Electric in Imperial and Riverside counties.

Line clearance workers at Asplundh ratified a 30-month agreement. Foremen will receive a 9.7 percent increase over that time. Other classifications will receive similar or greater wage increases. Employees attained a dental plan and an annual safety bonus of 2 percent of their gross salary.

Members at the Riverside Utility Department ratified a new contract. The agreement gives linemen-types 10.5 percent over 30 months, and pipe fitter-types get 9.1 percent. There are medical and retiree medical improvements, and bonus incentives.

Line construction remains good. Anyone interested in doing line work in Southern California, please contact us.

Solidarity is Key

Local 51 Bros. Bob Hardee, Jim Donnelly
and Paul Keeler on a PAR Electric job in
central Illinois.

L.U. 51 (catv, lctt,o,rtb,t&u), SPRINGFIELD, ILBest wishes to all for a prosperous, safe new year. As we begin 2005, we look to the future with realistic caution and concern as union members. The court system and agencies that are supposed to protect the rights of union workers for a safe, secure work environment are not there.

It will be our responsibility to insure that our brothers and sisters go home to their families at the end of each workday. Union members together have proven there is strength in concerted action. Let us remain strong through unity. We must keep the faith and maintain solidarity as our cornerstone.

With mergers and the corporate bottom line, a united membership is critical if we are to have a place at the table for our utility and construction members. Without unity, we will give them the opportunity to pick us apart one by one.

The work picture for our line, telephone and tree-trimming members looks to improve in 2005. Reliability of service and the state of the infrastructure will be the moving forces.

Attend your local unit meetings. This is the place where it all begins.

Dominic Rivara, B.M.
