January/February 2005 IBEW Journal
L.U. 601 (i&rtb), CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, ILRecently our apprenticeship coordinator, Bob Withers, set a schedule and organized Journeymen Training classes. This is a great opportunity for our members to further expand their knowledge of the trade. Fire Alarms, Motor Controls, Grounding, Variable Frequency Drives, OSHA 10, 2005 Code Changes and CPR were among the scheduled classes. Thank you to all of the instructors. At the time of this writing the work outlook is good. A few big projects should help our employment through the winter. I encourage everyone to be more involved with local union functions and make your voice heard by attending union meetings Members of Local 601 mourn the loss of Dale Hubert Sr., Richard Ren, Robert Russel, Arlo Deremiah Sr. and Hugh Bothwell. They will be missed. Chris Cook, P.S.
L.U. 611 (catv,es,i,lctt,o,spa&u), ALBUQUERQUE, NMAfter 31/2 months of a lab wide stand-down, Los Alamos is back up and running. During the stand-down the labs provided funds to avoid layoffs and allow for training for all KSL crafts. Recently I visited the Crown Point Institute Of Technology, where Chuck Clevenger, Robert Lucero, Randy Hill and Eugene Romero completed a hands-on weeklong photovoltaic course. The course included classroom study and hands-on training. The final product was a solar collector that feeds a library at the institute during the week, causing the electric meter to turn at less than half the normal speed, and on weekends it sells electricity back to PNM by spinning the meter backward. Bros. Lucero, Hill and Romero later went for additional photovoltaic training so they could become photovoltaic instructors. The last presidential election didnt turn out the way organized labor would have liked. Even New Mexico, normally a Democratic state, finished red instead of blue. Condolences to the families of the following brothers who recently passed away: Tom Coy, William F. Oden, Mark F. Dominguez, Ernest E. Haralson, Ronnie C. Teague, Florentino Ulibarri, J. S. Wilds, James F. Brace, Max Pacheco and Charles Snow. Darrell J. Blair, P.S.
L.U. 617 (c,i,o&st), SAN MATEO, CAOur 2004 outstanding apprentice of the year was Douglas Goldman. The 2004 apprentice graduation dinner was held on a cruise ship on San Francisco Bay. That evening the cruise vessel carried well over 100 years of fresh learning and hands-on experience that keeps the IBEW at the top of our national electrical standards of learning. Inside Wiremen graduates are: A. Brown, C. Caldwell, A. Camicia, L. Castillo, M. Chan, K. Clarck, N. Coral, L. Croon, P. Davis, M. East-Bratt, D. Golman, R. Hartman, R. Lewis, J. Miller, L. Nguyen, D. Schweickert, J. Sloan, J. Torres and J. Wilson. Our VDV graduates are T. Smith, R. Sanchez, P. Justensen, S. Lund and K. Vernale. We also commend our excellent apprenticeship instructors. First-year instructor Steven Tate establishes a foundation for future electricians. Keeping students knowledge on the upswing are: second-year instructor John Robins, third-year instructor Dave Huston and fourth-year instructor John Fitzpatrick. Bro. Ron Ricci puts on the finishing touch for the fifth year. Shop instructor Darrel Haussler and D.J. Siegman, as a tutor/shop instructor, are complemented by Larry Kroeker, Ph. D., as apprentice counselor. Thanks to all for their invaluable contributions. Pierre St-Cyr, P.S.
L.U. 625 (ees,em,i,mar&mt), HALIFAX, NS, CANADAAt the time of this writing, work has slowed in four of our five Construction Units. At present we have approximately 300 members on our out-of-work lists. In November 2004, IBEW First District Int. Reps. Michael J. Power and Brian J. Matheson presented a two-day Shop Steward course and a one-day course on "Conducting Effective Meetings." The local appreciates the time that members who attended gave to better themselves in these two very important areas. Local 625 members attending the "Effective Meetings" course were: Bros. Jim Beaton, Blaine Walker, Carter Milligan, Stephen Fader, John Flynn, Darren Marchand, Carl MacDonald Jr., Lawrence Boudreau and Tim Swinamer. Congratulations to the following members who retired in the last quarter of 2004: Bros. Ken Shea, Ken Bishop, Charles Hennigar and former business manager Fern Tardif. On a voluntary basis, Bro. Tardif will continue his position as chairman of IBEW Local 625 Benefit Trust funds, as well as chairman of our JATC. Local 625 wishes all these members a long, healthy and happy retirement. Thank you, brothers, for your dedicated service to the IBEW. Tom Griffiths, P.S.
L.U. 640 (em,i,rts, spa&u), PHOENIX, AZHope you had a great holiday season. Already, Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Steven M. Speer has entered negotiations with NECA on the Residential contract, and the Negotiating Committee for the Inside agreement will be meeting as well. Recently the Code of Excellence was adopted in Local 604. Once again, our members demonstrate that we are committed to making a difference and setting the standard in the electrical industry. The local officers/stewards have already been trained, and soon training for contractor supervision (GF&Frmn.) and our membership will begin. As you are aware, everyone is struggling to maintain their Health and Welfare. I am pleased to inform you of forthcoming changes the Board of Trustees has instituted to help our active members, as well as our retired members. Recently, the board received good news concerning lower costs to the Fund and increased return on our investments; and therefore, has lowered the self-payment rates for health coverage. This should help! Also, beginning on or about the second quarter of 2005, our RX-America prescription coverage will be changing to a percentage co-payment plan, rather than a reimbursement plan. Hurray! On Jan. 1 the journeyman wage scale increased to $22. Dale D. Jacks, P.S.
