Panelmatic Agreement

L.U. 648 (em,i,spa&u), HAMILTON, OHOur manufacturing group at Panelmatic ratified their new agreement on Oct.1, 2004. The new agreement runs Oct.1, 2004, through Sept. 30, 2005. It was a tough negotiation process, with health care as the top issue. Thanks to the negotiating team of Bus. Mgr. Gary Corbin and members Edward Kollstedt, Timothy Overstreet and Mike Wilson.

The kids Christmas party was a huge success with over 150 children, parents and grandparents attending. Each child received a gift from "Santa" and everybody enjoyed a great pancake breakfast. Thanks to Bill and Michelle Bowcock for their hard work and to all of Santas helpers.

Local 648 mourns the death of three members: Virgil Jefferies, a 47-year member; Ray Schwab, a 52-year member; and Robert Hannah, 51-year member. These brothers will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Attend union meetings and get involved in your local union!

Train-the-Trainer

L.U. 654 (i), CHESTER, PAThe election in November didnt turn out as well as we all had hoped, but it wasnt for lack of effort. Southeastern Pennsylvania had an incredible turnout that favored our candidates, due largely to the participation and contributions of time by the membership. It has certainly increased our awareness of how essential it is to be politically involved.

We recently hosted a National Fire Protection Association, NFPA-70E, Train-the-Trainer course, which was attended by representatives from locals as far away as Texas. It is good to see the IBEW at the forefront of making the workplace safer for all of us.

The membership mourns the passing of Bro. Mike Paglia and Bro. Tom Prince Sr. They will be missed.

Jim Russell, P.S.

Electric Light Parade

L.U. 665 (i,rts&spa), LANSING, MIThe MTEC building in Lansing is now completed and recently celebrated its grand opening. The MTEC building was built with all union labor and will be used for technical training for local businesses and Lansing Community College.

It was another great year for the Electric Light Parade in downtown Lansing. Local 665 is the major sponsor for the parade. The IBEW float led the parade in front of more than 60,000 spectators at this annual event. Thank-you to all who volunteered their time and skills to work on the float. We also thank the members who let their children ride on the float.

Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Kenneth Crawford, who died in December. Kenneth was a member since September 1997.

Jeremy Hidalgo, P.S.

Lets Make It Happen

L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CAThe work picture for Local 684: the tantalizing promise of a busy winter is a little further down the road. Hospital, power plant, high school, uptown and downtown projects are bound to break any day now.

State certification of electricians has been delayed six months and maybe longer. We need more certified electricians in California to make it real. A great opportunity to take our classes and pass this test. Enforceable licensing on prevailing jobs gives us the tools to hammer the non-signatory. So, brothers and sisters, lets make it happen.

Torrey Newton, P.S.

Right and Wrong

Local 697 initiated a new group of 23 apprentices at the
October 2004 meeting.

L.U. 697 (i), GARY AND HAMMOND, INThe election is over and we know the results. Throughout the political campaigns, citizens heard much about righteousness, morality, right and wrong, governing with integrity and representing all Americans and all Hoosiers for our greater good.

Now is the time for our elected representatives to prove with their actions what they promised working people of America and Indiana. Will officials move to punish those who voted against them, even though they swear to fairly represent all citizens? In Indiana, will they actually make any effort to instill honesty, fairness, integrity and moral uprightness in the political process they now control with a majority in the House, the Senate and the governors office, or will they take the opportunity to oppress working class families?

Moral and ethical issues facing our nation are important. Equally immoral: Making it easier for employers to pay their workers less, to shirk responsibility for workplace safety, and to encourage the outsourcing of jobs to Third World countries.

David A. Soderquist, P.S.
