Residential Class Graduates

Local 252 graduates of the Residential Class of 2004 were honored at a banquet.

L.U. 252 (ees,i,rts&spa), ANN ARBOR, MI—Bus. Mgr. Greg Stephens, Training Dir. Jeff Grimston, staff and members congratulate the graduating Residential Class of 2004. Local 252 is proud to announce that Rob Beckel, Eric Blake, Chris Callow, Kevin Cujar, John Dillard, David Foster, Nick Herrst, Kyle Lummis, Anthony Nutt, Nate Richardson, Randy Rochefort, Eric Rogers, Jeremy Rowe, Shawn Schoenbeck, Jay Tafini and Steve Yearling recently completed the three-year residential apprenticeship program. Jay Tafini earned the "Hollis Hamm Award" for academic excellence. Congratulations, Jay.

Our residential program has been in existence for over 21 years, and in the past five years the number of residential wiremen in our program has doubled. Currently, we have 146 residential wiremen in the field.

The growth of the housing market has been extraordinary in our jurisdiction. The prediction for 2005 and 2006 housing development is extremely good for the Ann Arbor area. Annually, the residential market generates over $20 million in electrical work—a market we cannot and will not ignore. Local 252 has a lot to be very proud of: A new school, dedicated instructors and the development of quality residential electricians.

Construction Compliance

L.U. 280 (c,ees,em,es,i,mo,mt,rts &st), SALEM, OR—Local 280 and the Oregon Pacific-Cascade Chapter of NECA have jointly funded through the LMCC a Construction Compliance Officer (CCO) to police licensing concerns in Local 280’s jurisdiction. This unique program is the result of cooperation among several agencies. The director of Oregon State Building Codes Division, Mark Long, was approached with the concept nearly a year ago. It was felt that such a program would only succeed if every affected party had a hand in the planning, implementation and hiring of the officer. Thus was born the strange alliance that includes the IBEW, Oregon BCD, NECA and the Oregon IEC. With the input of all concerned parties and the full power of the state to ticket persons performing electrical work without the proper license, David Codding, a retired Oregon police officer, was hired for the job.

This effort has been a total success! Everyone associated with the program agrees the CCO is a benefit to the electrical industry and to the safety of the citizens of Oregon. The word is out on the street: If you perform electrical work illegally, the penalty is high. By enforcing the licensure laws of the state of Oregon, we level the playing field for all our signatory contractors.

90th Anniversary Year

L.U. 294 (ees,em,i,rts, spa&u), HIBBING, MN—The work picture should improve for Book I if a couple of projects take off for us.

It has been a long winter here and all over the country. It just seems the economy cannot get out of its stall. If only we could have succeeded in electing a Democrat to the White House for the past two terms. …We need to learn from our past mistakes and not make them again. It sure would be nice to have good labor candidates in national office such as we enjoy locally. Our area legislators are very supportive of our issues and will fight for us at the state level.

We as a local are 90 years young this year. Our plans include a summer picnic, an outing which we have not had for a while.

If anyone has the recipe for getting members active in local affairs please let me know. If every IBEW member gave back 2-3 hours a month with volunteering no one could stop us. Imagine 750,000 people active in their local unions—we could move mountains. Our union is at a crossroads. Let’s make the right choices for the future.

Be union—buy union!
