Centennial Committee

L.U. 449 (catv,em,i,o,rtb, rts, spa &u), POCATELLO, IDThe membership is preparing to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of our local on Nov. 15, 2005. The Centennial Committee has been working on a logo and theme. They are going to purchase a special centennial knife by Buck made in Idaho. This will be a souvenir for the membership. The committee also approved license plate frames for the centennial celebration. They are putting together a special centennial program for the banquet and need articles and pictures from the members to add into the program. The banquet is planned for Nov. 12, 2005.

The committee is organizing several functions throughout the year for this celebration. Among the planned events, to name a just few, are annual picnics in Pocatello and Twin Falls and a Local 449 family night at the Chuckers baseball game in Idaho Falls. The local will keep the membership informed at the meetings and in the newsletters.

Congratulations to Bros. James Emery and Richard Fisher on their retirement. Brothers, may you enjoy your retirement for many years to come.

Our condolences to the families of the following members who passed away in February: Bros. Walter McDonald, Michael Makin, Frank Dransfield and Douglas McAdams.

Prizes Presented

L.U. 551 (c,i&st), SANTA ROSA, CAThis year looks promising for our local. I am proud to say that we have over 33 percent of our members state certified for the new testing in California. The LMCC of our local generously donated some major prizes for a raffle held Jan. 13 during the general union meeting for all of the members who were certified by then. Grand prize went to Frank Harrison, who won a $2,500 gift certificate to Sears. First prize went to Gary Simonson, who won a family vacation package to Disneyland. Second prize went to Joe Flocchini, who won an evening of wine country leisure in a very luxurious hotel. The LMCC also had several other worthy prizes including gift certificates worth as much as $200. Our January general union meeting was an exciting one with our 9th District Int. Vice Pres. Michael S. Mowrey attending. Though the incentive for the certification is pride in our abilities, it was nice of labor and management to add a little extra reward.

To honor our members we will hold our "Old Timers" Dinner on May 13, 2005. Years-of-service pins will be presented.

Work Welcomed

Local 557 members attend a class on National Electrical Code changes conducted by Apprenticeship Dir. George Dryer.

L.U. 557 (i,mt,rts&spa), SAGINAW, MIEngineering problems have delayed work in the Powertrain Plant construction. Looming deadlines, when product lines need to be operating, create rumors of employment opportunities for local hands. Members are running out of unemployment insurance and the gas bills continue to come, so work is welcome anytime! Jobs for the summer look promising as some school mileage funding should provide work opportunities; and Bus. Mgr. Bob Orr has kept nudging contractors into the bidding process.

In February, Phil Barnett was given the position of Membership Development director. He is pursuing permit applications and getting a feel for ways to help put union hands to work and bring contractors into the organization.

Our JATC has relocated to the local union office building on Gratiot Road. A major increase in rent at the building where electricians had been comfortably trained for years, prompted the relocation.

Our condolences go out to the families of Tom Bryan and Clarence "Buck" Iles for their loss. They both will be missed. The Iles family was pictured in the July/August 2004 "Local Lines" article.

Bonnie Hubbard Retires

Local 569 office manager Bonnie Hubbard (center) and staff, from left, Irma Corcoles, Dana Morgan, Janine Lowe and Melissa Rivera.

L.U. 569 (i,mar,mt,o,rts&spa), SAN DIEGO, CAOn March 31, 2005, office manager Bonnie J. Hubbard retired after more than 45 years of service with Local 569. Hired March 7, 1960, by then-Bus. Mgr. M.J. Collins, she continued to serve under the next six business managers: Howard J. Volz, Frank R. Underhill, R.B. Smith, Paul H. Blackwood, Thomas M. Pridemore, and current Bus. Mgr. Allen Shur. In recognition of Bonnies years of commitment and service to the local, our new offices completed February 2004 were proudly dedicated in her name.

Bonnies retirement was celebrated with an open house in her honor during the last three days of March. Members, employers and affiliates industry-wide were on hand to reminisce with Bonnie, and thank her for her contribution to the unionized electrical industry.

Bonnie has served tens of thousands of IBEW members and IBEW employers over the years. She will be missed!
