June 2005 IBEW Journal
L.U. 910 (i&rts), WATERTOWN, NY—Members at the regular March 2005 meeting voted on a journeyman wiremen’s pay increase of $1.70. A detailed and informational presentation was made by John Love. Our pension was increased by $.50 with a $1.10 increase for the health and welfare and the remaining $.10 placed in the apprenticeship training. The residential wireman agreement provides for two groups. The $.70 for Group I will be placed in the health and welfare fund. Their $.25 annuity will be moved to their pension. The $.80 for Group II will be placed $.70 in health and welfare fund and $.10 in wages. Their $.25 annuity will be moved to their pension. The light commercial increase will be placed $.50 in the pension with $.65 in the health and welfare plan. Work has remained slow this spring. The work picture looks better for the summer. Roger LaPlatney, P.S. L.U. 1116 (em,lctt&u), TUCSON, AZ—Can you say 100 plus weather? Well many of our outdoor working members can, with Arizona summer heat playing a big factor. They work safely by drinking plenty of fluids and wearing their protective clothing. Speaking of heat, this is a contract year for our Tucson and Springerville TEP members, with pension and medical benefits as one of the hot items. Bus. Mgr. Joe Carl, Pres. Jim Corbin, Springerville Unit Chmn. Bill Butler and Rick Ryan are discussing our new proposals at the table. During contract time our membership numbers grow and the union needs its members to attend monthly union meetings and the canvasser program, along with e-mail participation (for those who have access) to get needed information out. Our Lineman’s Rodeo committee is busy with selling T-shirts and organizing a golf tourney to raise funds to send our linemen to the 2005 Lineman’s Rodeo. Moving along is Unit 3 in Springerville. With a skilled union member workforce, the completion date is ahead of schedule; 850,000 man-hours without any incidents shows why having a union work force is a safe environment. Welcome to all our new 1116 union members. Your participation and support shows that: There Is Strength in Numbers! R. Cavaletto, P.S. L.U. 1306 (uow), DECATUR, IL—Our local is going through a tough time now with the sale of Illinois Power to Ameren. Seventy-seven members took the voluntary severance package and only 12 members are being replaced. Please keep an eye on your work and make sure management does not take it. Congratulations to all IBEW members working at Clinton Power Station who recently received the OSHA VPP Star Site Award. Continue to take the time to be safe, for going home unhurt every day is what it is all about. We are our brothers’ keeper. At this writing we are getting ready to start contract negotiations with IBEW-NECA Benefits Administration Association. We hope for a successful outcome for the members at this location. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Bro. Mark Wahlfeldt, who passed away in February. Congratulations to all members who have elected to retire this year. Collectively, they have 2,168 years of service to the IBEW. Congratulations to Bros. James Noeninger and Roy Jordan on their retirement with 50 years and 47 years, respectively, of service to the IBEW. Continue to attend your unit meetings and have a safe summer. Karlene Knisley, B.M/F.S.
L.U. 1928 (i,o&u), HALIFAX, NS, CANADA—Bus. Mgr. Mike MacDonald and facilitators Int. Reps. Michael J. Power and Charles “Chuck” McKenzie welcomed new and existing shop stewards along with members who attended the course “How to Conduct Effective Meetings” on Jan. 19 and 20, 2005. Attendees at the Shop Steward School were Clayton Beaton, Ken Bereta, Gerard Boudreau, Kris Campbell, Lawrence Capstick, Frank Doran, Will Doucet, Gordon Ellis, John Halloran, Ernel Henwood, Ron Jakeman, Brad Kerr, John LeJean, Louis MacArthur, Bruce MacKinnon, Jamie MacLellan, Martin MacPhee, Don McCarthy, David McKinnon, Kevin McNeil, Alan Muir, Mort Pelham, Sherman Roberts, James Sponagle and Dave Sweeney. Attendees at “How to Conduct Effective Meetings” were Jim Douglas, Ron Jakeman, Eric MacDonald, Brian MacEachern, Gerald Mattews, Kevin McNeil, Mike Mooney, Mort Pelham, Sherman Roberts, John Sullivan, Dave Sweeney, Pat Walsh and David Worth. Feedback from both courses was excellent. Some of the comments were: “Outstanding course,” “well organized,” “informative,” and “very useful in the workplace and union meetings.” Thanks were given to the business manager and the international representatives for a job well done. Mike MacDonald, B.M. L.U. 2286 (o&u), BEAUMONT, TX—A petition for union representation was filed with the NLRB on April 1, 2005, on behalf of the Planning and Purchasing employee groups at River Bend Nuclear Station in St. Francisville, LA. The Production and Maintenance employees at River Bend are already covered by a bargaining agreement. Our outside line construction work is steady and predicted to remain so through the summer. In mid-April the chief stewards at our fossil plants passed out proposal forms to determine the major issues concerning our membership. June 20, 2005, has been established to officially meet with Entergy to exchange proposals. The Fossil contract expires Aug. 6, 2005. The meter readers at Jeff Davis Electric Cooperative voted to accept the cooperative’s offer of a severance package by a 75 percent margin. The package included one week of pay for every year of service plus six months of insurance. Local 2285 still maintains our position that the contract language will not allow the cooperative to lay off employees as a result of subcontracting. Have a safe summer! Kitty Prouse, P.S.
