No Hablo Español

I just got my IBEW Journal this month and I don’t know how long this has been going on but on the back of the Journal half of the page was in Spanish.

I don’t read Spanish, and since I’m in America I found this very offensive.

When you live in a country you should learn their language.

Where’s the Foresight?

I don’t know what planet George Bush is President on.

Thank God that the people before me and the members at the time had the foresight to protect our pensions. I have been on Social Security disability since 2002. The stock market has not recovered from 9-11 yet and Bush wants people to invest in the stock market. Doesn’t he read a business page in any newspaper? If this Social Security reform should go through, it will be a nightmare.

How can those people sleep at night?

Remember and Communicate

I have been a member of Local 5 for over 25 years, and my family’s involvement in the labor movement dates back to the 1800’s in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland—miners by trade and in the social class of serfdom, or slaves. The political arena has always taken center stage in my household, and my father, who is 81 years of age and a veteran of WWII, can still debate with the best. My father’s wisdom and experience in matters of the labor movement as well as the politicians who seek to destroy all that our unions have fought for has made a deep and lasting impression on me.

How can this passion of the working people be brought to the table and flourish? A wise man once said, "You don’t know where you are going, unless you know where you have been." Various members of organized labor seem somewhat challenged on the big picture of the labor movement and its agenda. Too many concern themselves with gun control, abortion, gay marriage, religion and various other issues. The biggest concern is outside the Brotherhood. My solution to this quagmire is to compete by positioning ourselves in the media. Large corporations/GOP have capitalized and manipulated the population with propaganda tactics similar to the Nazi Party. I would certainly not object to a massive collaborative pension fund investment that would create a cable news network. Our Founding Fathers had great vision and so should we. FOX News is out there 24-hours a day making millions creating news, not reporting it.

I do not see this proposed project as an option; it is necessary for our survival.
