Volunteers Give Back

Local 1 journeyman wire-
men Neal McCormack and
Bob Muckler join fellow
local union volunteers at
the union hall as they
prepare to contribute their
time for the Rebuilding
Together project in St. Louis.

L.U. 1 (as,c,ees,ei,em,es,et,fm,i, mt,rts,s,se,spa,st&ws), ST. LOUIS, MO—On Sat., April 23, numerous Local 1 members volunteered for the annual Rebuilding Together-St. Louis Campaign. Volunteers met early at the union hall in preparation for a day of giving back to the community. The program seeks to revitalize neighborhoods by rehabilitating the homes of low-income families in need. Several IBEW/ NECA contractors donated tools and service vehicles for the work and area supply houses donated materials.

The day was certainly a success, but one day only scratches the surface of what is needed. These programs always need more volunteers. Local 1 has a proud history of giving back to the community. Please help carry on this tradition by volunteering your services for such projects. We can never have too many volunteers.

Please be advised of the following members’ deaths: Thomas L. Gregory, Strauther Bell, Terry Graybill, Peter F. Schubert, Dennis R. Franklin, John K. Debernardi, Louis H. Glaser, Michael E. Peniston, Luther T. Cooper, James O. Johnson, Frank K. Jones, Daniel E. Miller, Robert C. Horenkamp, Edward J. Loness, Edward Muhs, Kenneth M. Kingston, Ralph A. Olive, Dickerson W. Smith, Robert C. Vietor, Christopher J. Adams, Charles F. Robert, Hugh T. Wayham, Beatrice Kocy, James R. Harmon and Mark E. Whitehead.

Bro. Lucio Remembered

Local 8 members
mourn the loss of
Bro. Sy Jason Lucio.

L.U. 8 (i&mt), TOLEDO, OH—Local 8 mourns the tragic loss of Bro. Sy Jason Lucio, a journeyman inside wireman who lost his life in early April while working for a military contractor in Afghanistan. [Please see "IBEW on Duty" in the June 2005 issue of the IBEW Journal for a tribute to Bro. Lucio.] Our sincere condolences go out to Bro. Lucio’s family. Though lost Bro. Lucio will not be forgotten.

The Local 8 membership ratified a new three-year Inside and Inside Maintenance contract at the special meeting on April 11, 2005. The new contract took effect on May 25, 2005.

Stand Together

L.U. 15 (u), DOWNERS GROVE, IL—On April 14, 2005, Int. Pres. Edwin D. Hill issued a charter establishing the Local 15 Retirees Club. Interim club officers are Pres. Tom Turngren, Vice Pres. Ron Cook and Sec.-Treas. Wayne Johnson. For information on how to join go to www.ibewlocal15.org and click on "Retirees Page."

The Midwest Generation negotiating committee is preparing for upcoming contract negotiations.

In May, the local received good news: OSHA’s Washington, D.C. office upheld the regional director’s finding that Exelon Nuclear’s tagout procedure violated OSHA regulations. The ruling specifies that each worker should be hanging his/her personal OOS tag. The company has 60 days to appeal the ruling.

IBEW local unions on the Exelon property established the Exelon Unions Coordinating Council (EUCC) to coordinate efforts and work together as the company increases its anti-union tactics. The company’s union-busting attitudes began in 1999 at its nuclear operations and have spread across the entire company like a cancer—resulting in the lowest employee morale ever and an "us against them" philosophy from top management to the first line supervisors.

Contract negotiations for Exelon/ ComEd’s System Services Group are not going well. The company has proposed devastating changes to the employee health care benefit plan.

If we don’t stand together, we don’t stand a chance.

Resolution Adopted

L.U. 17 (catv,em,lctt,o&u), DETROIT, MI—The union would like to thank the Michigan State Conference IBEW members for their help and support regarding a resolution that was prepared and submitted to the Michigan State AFL/CIO Convention delegates for consideration and adoption. This resolution calls for a repeal of Public Act 141, Deregulation of Electric Utilities in Michigan. I am pleased to report that the resolution was adopted unanimously by the entire organized labor community. We are currently putting a plan and strategy together to mount a campaign to stop this train wreck from happening in Michigan. The big brawl is coming.

The work picture remains steady in all areas of the business work groups. SPE was awarded a 20-mile sub-transmission with primary build under line from the Thumb Electric Cooperative; project to start in July. Noble Environmental Power LLC plans to build 200 wind turbines in Sanilac and Huron counties; total height of these towers will be about 400 feet.

With sadness we report the passing of active members William R. Golden and Michael J. Staszewski; and retired members Arnold Grice, Lloyd J. Martin Jr., Charles H. Albright, Pierre J. Dion, Wilbur Salgat and Stanley D. Wise.
