Congratulations To All

L.U. 449 (catv,em,i,o,rtb, rts, spa &u), POCATELLO, ID—We welcome our new NECA representative, Robin Majors, to Idaho and look forward to working with her.

This looks to be a year of changes with Int. Sec.-Treas. Emeritus Jerry J O’Connor retiring and former Eighth District Int. Vice Pres. Jon F. Walters taking his place. We are grateful for the service and leadership that retired Int. Sec. Treas. Emeritus O’Connor provided and wish him the best in retirement. We are confident in the leadership that newly appointed Int. Sec.-Treas. Walters will provide, as we are proud of the fact that he comes from our ranks, having served as Local 449 business manager from 1979-82. Congratulations to newly appointed Eighth District Int. Vice Pres. Ted C. Jenson. Int. Vice Pres. Jenson also comes from our ranks and served as business manager of Local 449 from 1989-94.

Local 449 acquired some property and is currently in the design stages for a new union hall. This has been a dream of the membership for some time. It will be exciting to have a new facility and with a little luck we can celebrate our new hall along with our 100th anniversary in November.

Summer Activities

L.U. 456 (i&o), NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—It’s that time of year again where we all come together for so many local functions. Please remember upcoming events such as the fishing trips, picnics, the golf tournament, blood drives and much more. For more information about upcoming events please contact the hall.

Congratulations to the 2005 graduating class. Special congratulations to the Reilley family; with this year’s graduation, they became a third-generation IBEW Local 456 family.

On April 28, I attended a memorial service for working men and women who were killed or injured on the job. We must fight for a safe work place every day; our families depend on it.

Our local mourns the loss of Bro. Stephen A. Di Vona at the age of 34. Bro. De Vona was a member of our local for 15 years. His passing was very sudden and unexpected. Bro. Steve leaves behind his wife, Carla, 10- month-old twin sons Stephen Angelo and Carl Anthony, and his 3-year-old stepson Jaret. Steve, we will think of you often. Donations may be made to the Twins Fund, P.O. Box 516, Pt. Pleasant, NJ 08742.

Get Involved!

L.U. 459 (ees,em,so&u), JOHNSTOWN, PA—At this writing, our local is going through a voting procedure for a change that is done at our local’s four district union meetings. We are structured so that Local 459’s four district meetings make up our local’s union meetings. No matter how many postings we put up or mailings we do, many members feel they don’t need to attend a union meeting. Some want absentee votes on issues that are voted on at union meetings. Some have requested that we hold meetings on their employer’s time and property.

Without member participation our unions will grow weaker. Some of our own people condemn our I.O., our District or our officers but then refuse to be part of the democratic process of decision making.

Let’s wake up and accept the responsibility for making the union work. We need the same attendance at regular meetings that we get when we vote on the need for more money to operate our union.

Get involved before we no longer have a local union to represent us!

Tribute to Office Staff

Local 474 pays

Laverne Hill.

L.U. 474 (em,i,lctt,o,rtb, rts, spa&u), MEMPHIS, TN—It would be very difficult, in such a brief article, to discuss the many daily activities of our office staff, but it simply isn’t necessary. We already know!

We already know that: You, yes, you (Ms. Professional Office Lady) are a multi-tasking, problem solving, computer guru who also happens to know where everything is, even though you didn’t put it there.

And here’s to you, once again (Ms. Professional Office Lady) for your ability to make everybody’s business a top priority, placing their agenda on the front burner—even if it’s small potatoes (like most of the ones I’ve dished up).

It’s no secret that any multi-million dollar organization has a profound need to employ a professional office staff. But it’s not only their professionalism—it’s also their professional courtesy that makes our staff so good at what they do, and for that…this [flower] bud’s for you. Cheers!

Colts Stadium Project

L.U. 481 (ees,em,i,mt,rts,s&spa), INDIANAPOLIS, IN—Work continues to be steady. The new Colts stadium and airport terminal should start staffing up in the late summer or early fall.

Our local’s organizing efforts continue to go after the open shops. We filed a petition to take Edwards Electrical and Mechanical to a vote. The support seems to be very strong and at this writing we expect to know something soon.

Local 481 members took a few hours out of their day on the April 30 to "make the day" for several less fortunate families. Our members installed residential lights, receptacles, and conduit, in some cases. The dedication of the membership helped make Christmas in April a success. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

I encourage you to visit the local’s Web site at www.ibew481.org. The site is regularly updated with information about the local.
