Ted Heinrich Mourned

L.U. 673 (catv,i,rts, spa,t&u), PAINESVILLE, OH—Local 673 mourns the loss of Bro. Ted Heinrich. Always a teacher, Ted taught vocational students before entering the electrical trade. He continued to teach throughout his career as a wireman. From the 1960’s into the 1980’s he taught the apprentices in our JATC. For some time, Bro. Heinrich was our only instructor, teaching all four years of classes. If you ask our members who knew Ted, they smile and say "Ted was a gentleman," or "Ted gave so much to our local," or "Ted was born to teach," or "Ted was a scholar." We’ll miss you, Ted.

Local 673 ratified a new inside working agreement. Considering the work situation, the new agreement is a good one. Thanks to the negotiating committee for all their hard to bring us a contract.

We are still in negotiations with Painesville City and Conneaut Telephone.

The Bush administration continues its assault on America’s working class. This time it comes disguised as social security "reform." They are systematically trying to take back gains we have made over 70 years. Don’t let them do it. Write your representatives in Washington, D.C.

Special thanks to Bro. Dave Hudec for helping to prepare this article.

State Certification Requirement

Local 684 journeyman Jim
Marlett (second from right)
received an award for prevent-
ing a potential fatality at the
Walnut Energy Center project
in Turlock, CA. Extending con-
gratulations are Project Mgr.
Elliot Graham (left), Safety Mgr.
Dave Stapleton (second from

Foreman Don Generuex (right).

L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CA—The work picture in Local 684 remains solid. Even after the TID Power Plant, Howe, Red Top, Mer-Cal and Collins continue staffing up.

The state certification requirement was again delayed by six more months, until January 2006. We need those numbers to go up before it is law. Regional agreements are still being discussed.

Congratulations to our new Vice Pres. Mark Bowden, Exec. Board member David Francis and Examining Board member "Wild Bill" Tilger.

Unions Improve Lives

L.U. 697 (i), GARY AND HAMMOND, IN—On May 1, 2005, Local 697 members participated in the March of Dimes "Walk America." We have participated for many years in this endeavor to help children.

On April 30, 20 Local 697 members donated their time and skill for "Christmas in April," working on several homes for the benefit of the community as well as the individual families involved.

We had a great turnout for our last blood drive. The Red Cross was pleased they were able to take as many double red cell donations as they could handle.

The 46th annual Credit Union dinner dance was larger than ever, with a good group of younger members attending this year. The Credit Union is one of many great benefits of Local 697 membership.

Remember that our biggest assets at Local 697 are our members and their families. Whatever we think or say or do or accumulate has its greatest worth when it improves the physical, social or spiritual lives of those members and their families; and that is truly what makes the union strong.

Thanks to all our members and their families for helping make our communities better places to live.

‘Fear Factor’

Local 702 retired
Bro. Lloyd "Nelly"
Owen displays his
55-year IBEW
service award.
Bro. Owen formerly
worked as a fire-
man for Southern
Indiana Gas &
Electric.

L.U. 702 (as,c,catv,cs,em,es,et, govt,i,it,lctt,mo,mt,o,p,
pet, ptc, rtb, rts,se,spa,st,t,u,uow&ws), WEST FRANKFORT, IL—As of this writing Local 702 is in the process of raffling off a Polaris 4-wheel drive ranger on behalf of the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children. At press time, the winning ticket was scheduled to be drawn at our annual golf outing on June 17, 2005.

At this writing, we have 114 journeyman wiremen and 16 apprentice wiremen on the out-of-work list. We are still hoping the proposed projects become a reality to put our members back to work.

Pres. Bush is using the "Fear Factor" to try and sell the Social Security crisis. The real crisis in the United States is health care. Reportedly 88 million people in this country are without health insurance. The United States and South Africa are the only two rich, industrialized nations that do not have universal health care coverage. Medicare liabilities of $27 trillion are six times greater than that of Social Security.

The true crisis is the economic doomsday that we face if the health-care system is not addressed. Jobs, the economy and health care are all tied together.

Upgrade Classes

L.U. 725 (i,rts&spa), TERRE HAUTE, IN—As we celebrate the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of VE-Day during the European Campaign of World War II, we are proud of all the veterans, active-duty members, and reservists serving our country.

Locally, the Terre Haute Electrical JATC continues to offer journeyman upgrade classes in Terre Haute, as well as Bloomington, IN, and Robinson, IL. We also have an active safety committee that meets monthly to address any safety issues. For those members traveling outside the jurisdiction, please remember to sign up for ERTS at the hall prior to going to work. We congratulate the graduating class of 2005.

In Memoriam—We recently lost brothers Ralph A. Paulsen, John Gaskin, and Francis Bailey.
