July/August 2005 IBEW Journal

Summer Picnic

L.U. 68 (i), DENVER, CO—The summer picnic will be Sept. 10 at the Elks Club. Mark it on your calendar—it will be fun for all.

IBEW locals in the Colorado Electrical Conference were honored by the AFL-CIO at the Unity & Honors Celebration. Locals received the "No Retreat Award" for money and legwork donated by members and their families during the Labor 2004 campaign. We thank all who participated. It took a lot of time away from your families but we took the state House and Senate. We are gearing up for the next campaign. Local 68 and DAFL will be in contact with you. Please, for the good of your families and the union, give some time. It will be worth it when we win again.

Thanks to Market Recovery another new hospital project in Brighton was awarded to union contractor Sturgeon Electric over two major nonunion contractors. With the help of our members giving "8-for-8" and the contractors bidding markets that are not in their niche Local 68 will regain the market share we deserve.

Remember to attend Code of Excellence, Comet I & II and Five Step Rap. Refreshing your training is a good thing. Have a safe summer.

Larry O’Neill, Pres.

Dulles Airport Project

L.U. 70 (lctt&o), WASHINGTON, DC—Work is good and has been steady. One project underway is at Dulles International Airport.

IBEW inside and outside members from Local 70 and Local 26 are working on an ongoing Chesapeake Electrical Systems project at the airport. "We have been installing new runway lighting on the new runways and updating the old runways and have been doing some maintenance work also," reported Local 70 equipment operator Mika Penvose, who provided information for this article. "I hope more contractors would follow suite and see the need to work together with the different locals to finish their jobs safely and on time with qualified brothers and sisters in their line of work," Bro. Penvose said.

Legislative Victory

L.U. 77 (lctt,mt,o,t&u), SEATTLE, WA—We have won HB 1557, which has been in the works for eight years. The bill will expand the Washington State Electrical Board to allow the addition of one outside line worker. This bill will help to preserve our jurisdiction within the IBEW; we will have our interests, safety issues, and our industry represented by having a voice and a vote.
