Kudos to Volunteers

Local 777 lineman Troy De Lillo (back row,
left) as a volunteer coach.

L.U. 777 (u), READING, PA—Bro. Troy DeLillo is pictured in the accompanying photo with the basketball team he coached. Troy works as a lineman out of Reading, PA. While the squad had "a building year," Troy said it was a fun and rewarding year for all. The players started slowly but as the season rolled on the team began to gel. Our hats are off at Local 777 for Troy, his team and all volunteers throughout the IBEW who donate their time to help kids’ programs of all sorts. Their dedication and patience deserves our thanks.

Members Lobby Legislators

L.U. 804 (i&o), KITCHENER, ON, CANADA—For the first time in over a decade an Ontario government has introduced legislation that attempts to level the playing field and restore the balance of power within the Ontario Labour Relations Act (Bill 144) for workers and their families. Local 804 members have participated in the lobbying process by both contacting and forwarding letters to their respective MPP’s. For the construction industry the passage of Bill 144 is paramount for organizing in our province. Thanks and congratulations to all those who helped with this initiative.

On April 29 the government held a standing committee meeting regarding Bill 144 in Kitchener. Bros. Rod Hilton and Brett McKenzie appeared before the panelists and provided compelling arguments as to why the current labour legislation did not protect the rights of workers while attempting to organize their employers. During his presentation Bro. Hilton stated that, "… if implemented, the proposed changes will only give labour back the rights it had prior to the PC’s reign of terror which dismantled the Act in favor of big business." Hopefully, the efforts of our members and the activism of our building trade’s affiliates will be enough to have the legislation passed in the House. As trade unionists we must continue to fight each and every battle that we face.

Anniversary Celebration

L.U. 861 (i&o), LAKE CHARLES, LA—Brothers and sisters, our local union will proudly celebrate its 70th anniversary in August. We will have a reception with guest speakers to celebrate the occasion. Members will be notified of the details.

We have implemented the new referral procedure, as mandated by the International, effective June 1.

Congratulations to Bro. Cade Marcantel, our new outstanding apprentice. Concerning the work situation, unfortunately it is slowing down at the time of this writing and we do not foresee any new projects in the near future.

Linemen Needed

L.U. 876 as,catv, govt, lctt,o,t&u), GRAND RAPIDS, MI—Bro. Mike Scarlavai, a line apprentice and member of Local 876, is also a bull rider. Mike recently brought the DNCFR (Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo) Bull riding title back to the Great Lakes Circuit. According to GreatLakesProRodeo.com, "Mike Scarlavai covered Powder River Rodeo’s Mojo Dippin for 85 points to collect the DNCFR buckle" at the DNCFR event held at Pocatello, Idaho, March 19, 2005. Congratulations, Mike.

The local has a significant amount of work going on currently and additional jobs are available regularly. Members of the local who are working in other jurisdictions are encouraged to return home. We prefer to have all of our members working at home. Travelers from other locals are also welcome. We have a shortage of journeyman linemen. Our out-of-work list can be signed daily, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on the first and third Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. We are on Eastern Daylight Time. The books must be signed in person the first time and then every 30 days via facsimile, with a follow-up telephone call to confirm our receipt or by certified mail.
