Don Morgan Mourned

L.U. 756 (es&i), DAYTONA BEACH, FL—It is with deep regret that I announce the death of former Bus. Mgr. Don Morgan. Bro. Morgan passed away on July 16, 2005, after a short battle with cancer, with his family by his side.

Bro. Morgan became a member of Local 756 in 1959. He was elected business manager of Local 756 in 1977 and served in that capacity for 21 years before his retirement. During his time as business manager, Don served labor in many ways. He was vice president of the Florida Building and Construction Trades Council and president of the Volusia County Building Trades Council and the Central Labor Council. He served as a cabinet member for the United Way and also attended many IBEW conventions. Don served as chairman for the Kennedy Labor Relations Council and on the Florida Electrical Workers executive board for many years. In 2000, Bro. Morgan was inducted into the AFL/CIO Hall of Fame. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Political Action

L.U. 804 (i&o), KITCHENER, ON, CANADA—The recent changes to the Ontario Labour Relations Act (the enactment of Bill 144 and card based certification), should prove to be paramount for organized labour in the province of Ontario. Organized labour will now have the upper hand when it comes to organizing nonunion contractors, as automatic certification will be granted if the applicant trade union can submit representation cards on behalf of 55 percent of the workers. One cannot underestimate the importance of political power, and the alliances that we must continue to forge in order to protect the fragile industry in which we operate. We cannot forget who our political allies are and we must continue to reach out and remind them of our interests and the interests of our great Brotherhood. Interests: that will assist our local in retaining what little market share we control; interests that will assist us while we continue to attempt to organize the unrepresented workers in an industry which has become fragmented. The IBEW once dominated and controlled the electrical industry, but we lost control of it partially due to its exclusionary membership practices. Only with the participation and commitment of the rank and file membership will we be able to regain control of our realm.

Newly Chartered

Local 840 Pres. Daniel F. Nichols, left, Bus. Mgr. Clark D. Culver,
Third District Int. Vice Pres. Donald C. Siegel and Third District
Int. Rep. Lawrence N. Davis.

L.U. 840 (i), GENEVA, NY—Our new local was granted its charter by our International President effective March 1, 2005. We are located in the beautiful Finger Lakes area of upstate New York. Some of you may know there was a Local 840 in the past. That local was dissolved in October 1998 and its members and jurisdiction were amalgamated into Local 86, Rochester, and Local 43, Syracuse. We have the same jurisdictional boundaries as the former Local 840, with 120 members and an apprenticeship program set to begin this fall.

At our July meeting we were honored by the presence of Third District Int. Vice Pres. Donald C. Siegel and Third District Int. Rep. Lawrence N. Davis. Vice Pres. Siegel and Int. Rep. Davis worked together to make our new local a reality. Vice Pres. Siegel swore in our newly elected officers and spoke to us about what lies ahead for our local. He told us we had much hard work ahead of us. He encouraged us to work with our officers and representatives toward the goal of increasing our market share of the electrical work within our jurisdiction. We believe we are up to the task.

Election Results

L.U. 894 (i&o), OSHAWA, ON, CANADA—John Gillett was re-elected business manager by an overwhelming majority. Also elected were Pres. Lance Knowles, Vice Pres. James Horvath, Treas. Dan Tymchuk and Rec. Sec. Darrell Scott. Re-elected Executive Board member Larry Lytle is joined by new Executive Board members Jim Babcock, Grayson Colford, Dave Cunningham and Randy Gushulak.

Three Local 894 members are active members of auto racing teams (see www.ibew894.com). Our F2000 series team driven by apprentice Chris Hart (www.ibewracing.com) is currently in second place, as is our late model stockcar team driven by Steve Roberts (www.robertsracing.ca). John Bickle racing is fielding two cars in the super late OSCAAR series with great success.

The work picture in our area is positive; however this being a General Motors contract year, many projects within the auto complex are on hold. Nuclear plants are keeping many members and travelers employed and the plants have a positive outlook work wise for 2006.

Our summer events, family picnic and Harry Moran Memorial golf tournament were great successes. Thanks to volunteers and organizers.

Internationally, the 2006 IBEW hockey tournament will be held in Oshawa. Executive Board member Jim Babcock is coordinating the event and needs volunteers.

We pay tribute to member Tim Perks, who passed away July 11.

Darrell Scott, R.S.

Election of Officers

L.U. 910 (i&rts), WATERTOWN, NY—Congratulations to our newly elected officers. Our past Pres. Gary Gill swore in the officers at our July 2-5 membership meeting. They are: Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Dennis Affinati, Pres. Elizabeth Cassada, Vice Pres. Richard Curtis, Rec. Sec. Cynthia Bancroft and Treas. John O’Driscoll; Executive Board members William Burns, Wayne Cuthbert and Daniel Reff; Examining Board members Robert Erwin, Michael Littlefield, Kenneth Peter, James Rehley and Jeffrey Yousey. Delegates to the convention: Bus. Mgr. Affinati and Pres. Cassada.

At press time Sister Jaclyn Trivilino, a fourth-year apprentice, was poised for competition in the 2005 Ringside World Championships Aug 2-6 in Kansas City. That reportedly is the largest amateur boxing tournament in the world. Jaci fights in the 119-pound weight division and has a current record of 10-2. She has already earned a 2004 Vermont Golden Gloves Novice Championship title, the 2004 New England Golden Gloves Novice Championship title and a 2004 Empire State Games Championship title. Jaci has aspirations of going pro and we wish her the best.
