Transportation Labor Endorses Rail Safety Bill
May 9, 2007
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, railroad security has been a critical concern of 11,000 IBEW members who work on the nation’s railroads, other transportation trades and citizens who live and work along the carriers’ rights-of-way. Yet, federal support for training and procedures to prevent and address a major incident were woefully inadequate during the last Congress. This was a topic of discussion at the recent IBEW Railroad Conference held April 30-May 2, 2007.
Finally, railroad safety is getting the attention that workers and citizens deserve. On May 8, the House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials conducted a hearing on the Federal Railroad Safety Improvement Act, H.R. 2095.
The Transportation Trades Department (AFL-CIO), comprised of 32 member unions, including the IBEW, is supporting the bill.
