IBEW-Owned Radio Station Gives Voice to Working Families

May 23, 2007

With all the divisive rhetoric and pro-corporate tilt usually found on talk radio, issues of concern to working families are often ignored on the air. But union families in Alaska have a pro-labor alternative to turn to when flipping through the dial. Since being purchased by Anchorage IBEW Local 1547 two years ago, radio station KUDO 1080 AM has acted as a voice for labor through out the state.  “We always talked about needing a voice for labor so when the a station went on the market, the local decided to bite the bullet and buy it because there really was no other voice in the state for labor,“ said Local 1547 member and President of the state AFL-CIO Vince Beltrami.

A mix of national and local talk, KUDO has been growing in listenership. “We reach over 300,000 listeners in the greater Anchorage area. We getting new advertising weekly and even though Alaska is a red-state we’re getting a real audience now. We’re very optimistic about the future,” said Local 1547 Business Manager Larry Bell.
