Chicago City Council Investigates Pay Discrimination at Comcast CableJuly 23, 2007 Chicago Local 21 scored an important victory in their struggle for equal rights and fair wages at Comcast cable on July 19 when the Chicago City Council passed a resolution calling for hearings into the company’s history of pay inequality and discrimination against union workers.Local 21 submitted a complaint to the Chicago Cable Commission in early May, accusing Comcast of paying the approximately 95 technicians at its Cortland facility – their only union worksite – less than other employees. Nonunion employees at Comcast start at three more dollars an hour than union employees. Local 21 also noted in their complaint that the Cortland facility employees a higher percentage of African-Americans than any other worksite in the city, putting Comcast in violation of their own affirmative action plan required by Chicago’s Cable Ordinance. “All Comcast workers deserve fair and equitable pay,” said Local 21 Business Agent Jerry Rankins. “We are delighted that the City Council has decided to get involved.” To read Local 21’s press release, click here. |
