IBEW Safety Caucus Meets

July 26, 2007

Since the first IBEW Safety Caucus meeting in 2002, the group representing workers from multiple industries has met twice a year in conjunction with the National Safety Council Labor Division meetings. In early May, the caucus met in Pittsburgh, Pa., with a record 126 delegates in attendance.

The caucus addresses occupational safety and health issues faced by IBEW members on the job. Regular agenda items include a legislative and regulatory report from IBEW Safety and Health Department Director Jim Tomaseski, including safety standard activity the IBEW is involved in, and industry breakout sessions where delegates from the different jurisdictions can discuss safety and health issues unique to their industries. Construction, outside and utility, manufacturing, telecommunications, and a small group of other industries meet in individual session. The groups each share a summary of their discussions with the full caucus to provide delegates with a broad understanding of how IBEW member safety and health is being affected.

The Caucus is dedicated to providing training sessions to provide delegates an understanding of the issues that will introduce change into the workplace. The Pittsburgh caucus included sessions on electrical hazards and respiratory protection.

The May meeting presented opportunities for delegates to participate in a Worker’s Memorial Day rally, and join an IBEW/CWA march in support of Verizon workers. International President Edwin D. Hill, International Secretary-Treasurer Jon Walters, and Third District International Vice President Don Siegel visited the caucus. President Hill encouraged the group to continue their efforts to bring positive results towards safety and health issues that affect IBEW members.

The next IBEW Safety Caucus is scheduled for October 11 in Chicago, preceding the National Safety Council and the Labor Division meeting. For more information regarding these meetings, contact the IBEW Safety and Health Department at (202) 728-6040.
