Congress Again Raps Defense Personnel SystemAugust 8, 2007 For the third time, Congress has taken a stand in support of workers’ rights at the Department of Defense. Before its August recess, the House passed a bi-partisan amendment that would cut funding for the National Security Personnel System, an anti-union plan pushed by the Bush administration.Introduced by Reps. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Walter B. Jones (R-N.C.), the amendment was based on concerns that the personnel system would deprive Defense workers of the right to have their grievances heard by third parties. The pre-recess action follows two previous efforts by Congress to signal its opposition to NSPS. The House Armed Services Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee had previously acted to underscore collective bargaining by limiting the reach of the proposed system. |
