IBEW Locals Install Solar Arrays

March 9, 2009

IBEW locals across the country are taking their commitment to green energy and good jobs seriously by investing in renewable energy resources.

l Montpelier, Vt., Local 300 netted a deal with Central Vermont Public Service to create a 50-kilowatt solar array beginning this summer. The 265-panel installation will channel energy directly into the area’s electrical grid.

“Our union is clearly at the forefront of green collar job creation and Vermont’s burgeoning renewable energy movement,” said Local 300 Business Manager Jeffrey Wimette.

l  In Colorado Springs, Colo., Local 113 is installing a 31-kilowatt solar array on the roof of its union hall, which is expected to save the local at least $200,000 in utility costs over the 25-year life of the system. The 136-panel system will be one of the largest solar arrays in the Colorado Springs area.

“We believe (solar energy) will be a growth industry this year even with the economy the way it is,” Local 113 President Charles Johnson told television station KKTV.

l  Portland, Ore., Local 48’s new 48-kilowatt solar array will provide 40 percent of the local’s power over the next 30 years. The system will also be used to train members on the installation of solar panels.

“The solar array will be a showcase for all prospective parties interested in installing their own solar arrays,” Local 48 Business Representative Dave Johnston told the Northwest Labor Press. “Future apprentices will be able to see a large solar installation right next door.”
