Workers Independent News, a service that produces union-related news content and distributes it to radio stations across the U.S., launched an expanded Internet news service March 15.

Working from studios in Madison, Wisc., WIN plans to produce three 15-minute news programs each week with stories about labor unions and the movement.

They are available for streaming playback or download at www.laborradio.org.

The online newscasts are a better way to reach the estimated 25 million Americans who get most of their daily news from the Internet, according to Frank Emspak, the news service’s founder and Executive Producer.

“More and more people are getting their news this way, especially younger people. This is only going to continue to grow,” Emspak said.

A first round of funding for the project was provided by the IBEW, the National Education Association and the Office and Professional Employees International Union.

“News, and especially business news, tends to be produced from a corporate point-of-view these days,” Emspak said. “Our partners in the labor movement realize how important it is to present news from the working person’s point-of-view.”

WIN began providing content for radio stations in 2002, and now reaches the listeners of more than 130 radio stations across the country. At one of the largest, WINS-AM in New York City, an estimated 850,000 people hear the union-related news stories each week.
