Just Another Day at the Office

High over the Tennessee River in Alabama, Chattanooga, Tenn., Local 175 member Allan Card navigates a lattice tower at the Wheeler Dam switchyard.

Changing out World War II-era insulators 100 feet in the air is all in a day’s work for the journeyman lineman employed by L.E. Meyers on a contract with the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Card and his crew recently replaced 21 insulators installed in 1943 with those with 35,000-pound strength and greater insulating value.

“I thought it was really neat, changing out something that was there way before my time,” said Card, a six-year IBEW member.

The hydroelectric power plant at Wheeler Dam in Muscle Shoals, Ala., has 11 generating units.
