The Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO has launched a new campaign encouraging President Obama to take action on good construction jobs by supporting the Keystone XL pipeline project.

The proposed $7 billion project would transport unrefined petroleum from the oil sands of northern Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico, creating an estimated 20,000 private sector positions.

Using a combination of print and online ads, along with social media and Internet petitions, the building trades are encouraging project supporters to help the campaign go viral.

Building Trades President Mark Ayers wrote on Huffington Post:

[I]t is America's workers who are clamoring for the expedited approval of this important project. As President Obama has rightfully declared when it comes to the creation of jobs, "WE CAN'T WAIT."

Not only will Keystone stimulate more than $20 billion in new spending for the economy, it will help reduce our country’s dependency on Middle East oil.

Says IBEW International President Edwin D. Hill:

For Americans sick of seeing our national security, our financial future and our young men and women placed in harm’s way in conflicts over control of oil, this project represents a major step in establishing energy independence and security.

It is currently under review at the U.S. State Department, with a final decision expected by the end of the year.
