Verizon and IBEW, CWA Begin Mediation

Following a contentious year that saw a two-week strike by thousands of unionized Verizon employees, leaders of the IBEW and the Communication Workers of America convinced the telecom giant to agree to federal mediation to move ahead with contract talks.

The two parties began meetings with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service on July 25. The parties are legally bound to follow the ruling of the mediation.

More than 45,000 IBEW and CWA members have been working under an extension of the previous contract, which expired on Aug. 7, 2011.
