Out of the hundreds of submissions for our 15th photo competition, we now present the cream of the crop – 15 finalists that truly capture the spirit of the IBEW.

But who wins top honors is up to you.

Review the photos below and rank your top three. Roll over pictures with your cursor to reveal information about each image. After you click the “vote” tab, you can see who’s winning so far.

You can only vote once, so please choose carefully.

The contest closes on Dec. 11. Winners – along with honorable mentions – will then be profiled in a feature story in the January 2013 issue of The Electrical Worker, so stay tuned!

Photo contest finalist descriptions:

White Out: Even the worst winter weather won’t stop IBEW linemen from keeping the power running as Charlotte, N.C., Local 962 member Paul Phillips captures in his photo.

Education is a Right: Austin Local 520 members join with other concerned Texans protesting education cuts at the Capitol in this action photo taken by member Michael King.

Bracket Welding: Hamilton, Ohio, Local 648 member Jim Burrows catches a fellow member hard at work welding conduit brackets on a tunnel-enclosed conveyor system.

First Climb: Apprentice linemen make an early morning pole climb in this photo from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Local 320 member Robert Schaetzl.

Maui Pipeline: Tulsa, Okla., Local 1002 member J.D. Williams’ picture shows, from left, Dave Heyman, Honolulu, Hawaii, Local 1186; Don Pierce, Local 1002 and Raymond Kendall, Local 1002, installing a bus at a substation of the Kaheawa Wind Power development in the West Maui mountains last April.

Snow Glow: Transmission lines rise out of glowing snow in this chilling portrait of winter.  Seattle Local 77 member Angelo Morgan captured the essence of the season near the Palouse River in northern Idaho.

The Higher Wire: Syracuse, N.Y., Local 1249 member Randy Fletcher found the perfect angle to show the sheer insanity of Nik Wallenda’s June 15, 2012, tightrope walk across Niagara Falls. Fletcher was part of the IBEW team that strung the 1,800-foot wire over the widest part of the falls.

L.A. Light: A substation study in black and white shot by Mauricio Garcia from Los Angeles Local 18 shows Los Angeles Department of Water and Power workers Brian Twomney and Travis Rivera in sharp relief against the brilliant California sky.

The Lone Pole: A crew led by Seattle Local 77 member Bill Strite repairs a lonely power pole near Monumental Mountain in western Washington State. If you look closely at the feet of the man on the right, you can just make out the snowshoes they needed to make the last half-mile of the walk to the top.

Night Bridge: Long Island, N.Y., Local 25 member Thomas Lawless snapped this vivid nighttime photo of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Loading: Bethlehem, Pa., Local 1600 member Karen Johnson loads distribution transformers for shipment at PPL’s system facility center in Hazleton. Photo by fellow Local 1600 member Sandra Payne.

Parade: New York Local 3 member Brandon Leung captured this image of fellow members marching up Fifth Avenue as part of the city’s Labor Day parade on Sept. 8.

Fog Rolls In: A low morning fog over the ocean frames this surreal image of two members heading out in a window rig to work on the new Revel Casino in Atlantic City. Photo by Folsom, N.J., Local 351 member Bill DeClement.

Solar City: IBEW electricians help San Francisco’s Exploratorium science museum tap into the power of the sun in this photo from Local 6 member John Davis.

In A Flash: Electricity can certainly be dangerous – but it can also create some stunning visuals, as long as you keep your distance. Waterbury, Conn., Local 420 Michael Malone snapped this photo of a 115-kilovolt disconnect arcing after being opened at night.
