UNITING
TO HELP OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS...
“These are our brothers and
sisters. We are not going to let them down in their time
of dire need.” With these words, IBEW International
President Ed Hill set in motion the Brotherhood’s mobilization
to help those who have lost homes and jobs as a result of Hurricane
Katrina. The IBEW’s focus will be on its members,
but efforts will aid the communities at large and be part of
a larger effort to help all affected by the storm and its aftermath.
The IBEW has sent some 72,000 bottles
of water to the disaster area to help provide some immediate
relief. But the most practical way that the Brotherhood
can help is to raise money. There are many government and
charitable agencies already on the ground trying to serve the
immediate needs, including food and shelter, of those displaced
by the hurricane. The IBEW’s relief fund will provide
short and long term help to those members and their families
who have suffered the greatest losses. President Hill has
dispatched representatives to the affected areas to determine
what other help may be needed, and appeals for clothing, tools
and other items may be forthcoming. In the meantime, please
do not send food or other items to the IBEW International Office. We
have neither the space nor the means to get such items in the
hands of those who need it.
Also important are efforts to help
IBEW members and other rebuild their shattered lives by getting
back to work to earn a livelihood. President Hill and International
Secretary-Treasurer Jon F. Walters sent a letter
to all IBEW locals on September 2, 2005 outlining the scope of the needs of
our members and informing them of the creation of the IBEW Relief Fund
.

This site will be updated regularly
to keep you informed on what the IBEW is doing to help and how
you can become part of our Brotherhood’s effort to help
our own members and their families and communities in the hour
of their greatest need. Local unions surrounding the affected
areas are being asked to establish relief centers to reach out
to IBEW members needing assistance.
