IBEW President Stephenson on the Repeal of the Clean Power Plan

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers President Lonnie R. Stephenson issued the following statement regarding the repeal of the Clean Power Plan:

“The issue of combating climate change remains one of our nation’s top priorities, but reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to a renewable energy economy requires comprehensive energy legislation, not ill-thought out regulations like the Clean Power Plan.

“As it stood, the CPP would have unnecessarily cost thousands of good jobs and threatened our nation’s energy security in pursuit of an unrealistic timeline.

“The job of formulating energy policy belongs to Congress, not the EPA.

“Going forward, America needs a truly bipartisan energy plan that can effectively combat global warming, encourage the development of alternative forms of energy such as wind, solar and clean coal and investment in energy grid modernization.

“As a union representing 750,000 active and retired energy professionals across North America, we stand ready to work with elected officials, industry leaders and regulatory agencies to make it happen.”
